What Human Foods Can a Xolo Eat?

At Xolo Puppies, we know that healthy nutrition is vital for every Xoloitzcuintli. These ancient, loyal dogs may look unique, but their dietary needs are not so different from other pups. Still, some foods are safer than others, and a few are best avoided!

Fruits and Veggies: Treats or Trouble?

Xolos, like all dogs, thrive on high-quality dog food but can enjoy certain human foods in moderation. Safe choices include apples (without seeds), bananas (in small amounts), strawberries, blueberries, carrots (shredded), and cooked pumpkins. These snacks offer fiber, vitamins, and fun crunch. Watermelon (seedless) and ripe tomatoes (in moderation) are also safe treats.

Avoid grapes, raisins, avocado (because of persin), and onions or garlic. These can be toxic to Xoloitzcuintli and other dogs, quickly leading to sickness or worse.

Proteins and Grains

Xolos are mainly carnivores, but some grains and plant-based proteins are healthy additions. Lean cooked meats (chicken, turkey, pork, fish), eggs (cooked only), and some dairy (plain yogurt, low-fat cheese if not lactose intolerant) support healthy skin and muscles. Quinoa and plain, fully-cooked rice can be beneficial, especially for pups with sensitive stomachs.

Never feed raw eggs, seasoned meats, or bones that might splinter. Always ensure food is plain, unseasoned, and free of added sauces, salt, or artificial sweeteners.

Common Danger Foods

The following are especially important for Xolo parents to avoid:

  • Chocolate: even a small amount can cause severe illness.
  • Grapes and raisins: can lead to sudden kidney failure.
  • Xylitol (artificial sweetener): extremely toxic, even in small quantities.
  • Macadamia nuts, onions, and garlic: hazardous in any amount.

Always consult your vet if you’re unsure about a new food or if your Xolo ingests something questionable.

Tips for Feeding Your Xoloitzcuintli

Stick mostly to high-quality dog food designed for sensitive skin and digestion.

Offer healthy, dog-safe treats only as occasional rewards.

Watch for allergies (itchy skin or upset stomachs) with new foods.

Fresh water should always be available.

Each Xolo is unique. Adjust meal size and treats for age, size, and activity level to avoid weight gain or nutritional imbalances.
